Horonobe Underground Research Center managed by Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is the Japan's best environment to understand the project of geological disposal of high-level radioactive waste, because there is an Underground Research Laboratory (URL) in the center besides an exhibition facility which explains the content of research conducted in the URL. In the area of the center, there is also an exhibition facility for the full-scale model of engineered barrier system of geological disposal. JAEA takes advantage of this opportunity to conduct public hearing including questionnaire research regarding the questions, anxieties and comments by the visitors for geological disposal project. This report summarizes the result of statistical analysis of 3,842 visitors from April 2017 to January 2018.

JAEA has held public meetings on radiation and its health effects mainly for parents of students in kindergartens, elementary schools, and junior high schools in Fukushima prefecture after the Fukushima nuclear accident. These meetings are held based on our experience of practicing risk communication activities for a decade in JAEA with local residents. Questionnaires were collected after the meetings. By analyzing questionnaires, we confirmed that interactive communication is effective in increasing participants' understanding and in decreasing their anxiety. Risk communication study office supported the staff members of the meetings providing information such as participants' questions in the past meetings. To provide information, we made a homepage and held the orientation for the staff members Questionnaires of the staff members were also collected and analyzed after the public meetings.

Thecnical study on utilization of the high-current electron accelerator

According to the Long-term Program for Partitioning and Transmutation which was published by the Atomic Energy Commission in 1988, study on the transmutation using an electron accelerator, which was a part of the program, has been carried out in the O-arai Engineering Center. It is the study on converting radioactive fission products for example Strontium and Cesium to stable nuclides by photonuclear reaction caused by high energy gamma-ray made by an electron accelerator. It was thought that a 100mA-100Mev (10MW output power) accelerator would be needed in order to carry out the transmutation study in engineering phase. Therefore, development of the High-Current Electron Accelerator whose target had been 20mA-10Mev (200kW output power) accelerator was carried out as development of elemental technologies on beam stabilization. Construction of the accelerator was completed in March, 1997, afler development of the elemental devices. After the facility assessment, the full-scale experiment of the accelerator was started in January, 1999. However, the reform of the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corporation caused by the fire and explosion accident in the Asphalt Bitumenizing Facility was hardly discussed between the completion and the starting the experiment. It was decided that development of the accelerator would be terminated until the fiscal year 1999, results of the development would be summarized, and the developed accelerator would be planed to utilize as a beam utilization facility, in the Medium-Long-term Project Program of the Japan Nuclear Fuel Cycle Development Institute which was in March, 1999. It showed the direction that research and development for transmutation would be terminated. According to the Medium-Long-Term Project Program, the utilization of the accelerator was discussed, and research themes of the utilization of the accelerator in the various fields as well as nuclear field were investigated.

Geomicrobiology for the geological disposal of radioactive wastes and the assessment of potential microbial effects on chemical and physical changes in repository environments and nuclide transport have been pointed out to be of cardinal importance. However, the detailed effects of microbes are poorly understood. In order to study microbial activities in underground and their effects on a repository and to know the recent study status, a literature survey was performed. In addition to this, the current research activities of major research laboratories in the world were investigated. And microbiology related meetings and conferences were also searched. In the literature survey, biodegradation and physical disruption of materials, gas generation, alteration of ground-water chemistry and the direct uptake of radionuclides were identified as factors which potentially affect the nuclide containment capability of the repository. And through the search for laboratories and meetings, information on the most recent status of biological study on the underground repository and on conferences related to geomicrobiology were obtained, respectively.
